A new social media depression study published in the journal Depression and Anxiety revealed that social media users are more prone to depression.

Depression is a serious condition that affects how you think, feel and act. Social media can cause depression in people predisposed or may worsen existing symptoms of depression. So the problem is not necessarily at the level of social platforms, but in the way we use them.

Feelings of depression caused by social media and depression facts

Although social media depression is not a recognized medical condition, this condition seems to be a real phenomenon that affects about 50% of social media users. As mentioned above, researchers have come to the conclusion that social media can worsen the mental health of people who have a certain predisposition to depression and other disorders.

Following the research, scientists found that young adults who claimed to use multiple social media platforms were at three times more likely to develop depression and anxiety than their peers who did not use such platforms. Additionally, the researchers noted that this trend is maintained even in the case of reducing the total time spent on social networks.

A social media and depression study performed on 1,787 adults aged between 19 and 32 years. Eleven of the popular social media platforms – Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest. Vine and LinkedIn – were included in the questionnaires.

People who used between 7 and 11 of these networks were at a higher risk of 3.1 reporting a high level of depressive symptoms than their non-users.

It was also found that as young people used more platforms, the more they were at higher risk of having a higher level of anxiety – 3.3, more pronounced compared to their peers who did not use such pages.
